Authentix and SGS Awarded Renewal of Fuel Marking Program in Republic of Senegal

Authentix, the global leaders in authentication, has renewed its partnership with SGS for the fuel integrity program in The Republic of Senegal. The contract renewal was granted after a competitive tender process. Through this ongoing fuel marking program, Authentix and SGS have helped The Republic of Senegal recover tax money that would have otherwise been lost to fuel fraud, ensure fuel quality for motorists and protect the environment.

Authentix and SGS combat the sources of fuel adulteration through the addition of Authentix technology to known adulterants such as kerosene and other low tax fuels which are often used to illicitly adulterate legal tax paid fuels.

Proprietary Authentix testing technology helps inspectors quickly determine if the fuel in question is legal and whether it has been adulterated with low tax fuels. These tests can be conducted in the field and provide an immediate indication of fuel fraud.

Authentix technology solutions power fuel marking programs globally. Authentix has provided technology for a number of successful fuel marking programs in Africa including The Republic of Senegal, Cameroon, Kenya, Cote d'Ivoire and Togo. Authentix' comprehensive fuel marking technology has been instrumental in helping these countries combat fuel fraud and protect tax revenues.

Kenya Renews National Fuel Marking Program with Authentix

Authentix, the global leaders in fuel authentication, has been awarded a multi-year renewal of the national fuel marking program in Kenya. Through the ongoing marking program, Authentix has helped Kenya recover tax money that would have otherwise been lost to fuel fraud, ensure fuel quality for motorists and protect the environment.

This program was first implemented in 1998 to curb the illicit adulteration of domestic Kenyan fuel with fuel destined for export to surrounding countries. Less than a year later, the program was expanded to include protection of domestic diesel from dilution with lower quality kerosene.

Since the program began, Authentix has partnered with Kenyan authorities and their operational partner in this program, SGS, to implement significant technology advances that enable the continued efficacy of the program in the face of determined attempts at undermining and laundering by illegal operators in the fuel market. Proprietary Authentix testing technology helps inspectors quickly determine if the fuel in question is legal and whether it has been adulterated with low tax fuels. These tests can be conducted in the field and provide an immediate indication of fuel fraud.

"The fuel marking program in Kenya is an excellent example of the kind of long term results that are possible through a program of this nature. We are proud to provide the advanced nano-technology that allows this to continue to be effective year in and year out," says Royce Ferguson, Managing Director of Africa for Authentix.

As the global leader in national fuel marking programs, Authentix has a history of success in Africa with similar programs in South Africa, Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire, Cameroon, Swaziland and Togo.

Authentix Helping Cameroon Fight Fraud with New Fuel Marking Program

Authentix, the global leaders in authentication, have partnered with Hydrocarbons Analyses Controls S.A (HYDRAC) to implement a new fuel and fuel adulterant marking program to help the West African nation of Cameroon recover tax money being lost to fuel fraud and ensure fuel quality for Cameroonian motorists.

"This new marking program means Cameroon will be able to fight losses due to fuel tax fraud," said Michael Ngako Tomdjo, Minister of Water and Energy, Cameroon. "Implementing this program will help Cameroon effectively combat fuel fraud, aid consumers and protect the environment."

As part of the program, Authentix marking technology is added to legal tax-paid fuels to indicate that the fuel is authentic and not diluted with lower cost solvents or smuggled fuels. Using Authentix markers, government officials can detect the exact level of dilution. Additionally, to identify and combat the sources of fuel adulteration, a separate Authentix technology is being added to kerosene and other low tax fuels which are often used to adulterate legal tax paid fuels. The Government of Cameroon has incurred heavy losses of fuel tax revenue due in part to tax-free fuel illegally smuggled into the country and because of rampant fuel adulteration. The Authentix program promises to help prevent future revenue losses.

Using proprietary Authentix testing technology, Cameroon can now quickly determine if fuels are legal or if they have been diluted with adulterants or smuggled products. These tests can be conducted in the field and provide an immediate indication of fuel fraud. Currently fuel and fuel adulterant marking is taking place at several locations around Cameroon.

"Authentix operates fuel marking programs all over the world and countries in West Africa are taking note," says Royce Ferguson, Managing Director of Authentix in Africa. "In the past three years Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal and Togo have all seen the value of protecting their fuel with a marking program and we're excited that Cameroon is following suit. In addition to the financial benefits, these programs protect motorists from the damaging effects of using low-quality fuel and the Government of Cameroon is to be commended for taking this important step to protect its citizens from these illicit practices."

Alex Jarvis Receives Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Association of Currency Affairs

Alex Jarvis, Authentix' Director, Global Currency, has received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Association of Currency Affairs (IACA). The award was given at a ceremony held during the Currency Conference in Singapore .

For 35 years, Alex Jarvis's vision and expertise have made him a distinguished member of the Banknote Industry, domestically and internationally, for both Central Banks and companies alike.

Alex joined Authentix in 2005 after spending the majority of his career with the Bank of England. In 1987, Alex was appointed Managing Director of the Bank of England Printing Works. Under his leadership, the Bank of England completed a £30M re-equipment program which included replacement of web presses with three lines of Giori "super-kits" and introduced a new series of Bank of England notes. He reduced unit production costs and improved productivity for every year of his 14 years as managing director, thereby making the Bank of England Printing Works one of the most cost-efficient State-Owned banknote printers in the world.

During his time with the Bank of England, Alex represented the Bank on numerous international committees, including the European Banknote Printer's Conference, the Four Nations Group on Advanced Anti-Counterfeiting, and the Central Bank Counterfeit Deterrence Group (formerly known as Special Study Group - II).

Alex was handpicked by the Governors of the Central Banks of the European Union to help introduce the Euro by forming and leading the EU-wide Banknote Working Group. His team designed, developed, printed and issued the first Euro and was also responsible for planning the withdrawal of all currencies the Euro would replace. He chaired the Group for six years until the formal establishment of the European Central Bank in 1998.

Apart from his influence on the Euro, Alex's most notable contribution within the Banknote Industry was in persuading fellow-members of the Four Nations Group (Australia, Canada, USA & UK) to initiate a dialogue with those companies involved in Vending and Third Party Verification. This was achieved through a series of Conferences - all of which he chaired - with representatives of companies manufacturing banknote readers and sensors, which have helped to influence Central Banks to have a more open and consultative attitude towards the Industry.

While at the Bank of England, Alex was asked to advise several other Central Banks, including Colombia, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Canada, on technical and operation matters relating to note printing and sorting operations.

Authentix Safeguards Products of the Leading Colombian Spirits Manufacturers

Authentix, the global leader in authentication, and Figurazione, a leading systems integrator, have partnered to safeguard spirits produced by the leading producers in Colombia; Fabrica de Licores de Antioquia (FLA) and Industria de Licores del Valle (ILV). With over 48% market share, FLA is the largest domestic spirits producer in Colombia. Both FLA and ILV are state-owned entities whose revenues make up a significant portion of their respective state government revenues.

These programs were implemented in late 2010. Since then approximately 100 million authentic bottles of spirits have been protected. Field inspection equipment has been provided to inspectors across the country to help identify and investigate suspect products in the market. 10% of the over 300 retail outlets inspected have resulted in discovery of counterfeit products leading to multiple investigations and eventually arrests. During this time frame, FLA enjoyed an increase in sales of over 10%.

The Authentix/Figuarzione solution involves multiple layers of security which includes:
- An overt hologram in product packaging for tamper evidence and to help consumers verify product authenticity by visual inspection
- A covert feature in the product packaging for authentication by inspectors
- A covert feature incorporated in ingestible product for verification in the field by inspectors
- A covert feature incorporated in ingestible product for forensic verification in certified labs by the experts
- Handheld field verification detectors and test kits distributed to the investigators in the field

With nearly 1,300 Police and Government Tax Inspectors trained in authentic product verification across 28 of the 32 States in Colombia, the program has started to impact the counterfeit problem which had reached over 50% of spirits offered for sale in some areas. "The authorities now have a definitive test and are making progress with indictments and arrests of counterfeiters thereby increasing government revenues," commented Andres Diaz, CEO of Figurazione.

"These programs not only protect Colombian citizens from the dangers posed by illicit spirits but also help the government protect its revenues," says Majid Fazeli, VP Authentication and Serialization, Authentix. "Authentix has a successful track record of helping governments protect their citizens and their revenues through marking programs that ensure the authenticity of a wide variety of products ranging from fuels to pharmaceuticals and spirits."

Authentix Introduces Comprehensive Authentication Traceability System

Authentix, the global leader in authentication, is launching the Comprehensive Authentication Traceability System (CATS) to help brand owners fight the growing threats of product counterfeiting, product theft and grey market diversion. Now, for the first time, CATS will provide clients with complete visibility into the supply chain, helping ensure consumer safety and limit the scope of product recalls while seamlessly integrating into existing client processes. This solution is the first of its kind to provide beginning-to-end product oversight—following the product life cycle from the raw materials used in the manufacturing stage to finished product at the point of sale. CATS helps brand owners in the pharmaceutical, medical device, consumer packaged goods, beauty, tobacco and spirits industries address their supply chain uncertainties.

“CATS marries authentication and traceability by delivering the authentication technology through the product serial number,” says Craig Stamm, President, Authentix. “In the past, a serial number could be copied but with CATS a serial number becomes both an authentication feature and a traceability feature that helps brand owners track products globally in near-real time. "

CATS is a fully integrated system utilizing advanced authentication technologies, item-level serialization and state-of-the-art SaaS architecture and works with existing client ERP and WHM systems. The system also features extensive exception handling to ensure data integrity combined with the ability to trace serialized and non-serialized products. As an added advantage, the system can be deployed quickly and incrementally to suit client needs.

CATS links data from all of the transaction points during the product life cycle, including the manufacturing, warehousing, distribution, retail inspection and consumer stages. Information from each transaction point is aggregated in a centralized database and can be readily accessed in near real time.

CATS helps brand owners lower risk, protect and increase revenues and manage product recalls while serving as a cost effective system with minimum implementation risks—effectively ensuring consumer safety and consumer confidence.
