Authentix and SGS Awarded Renewal of Fuel Marking Program in Republic of Senegal

Authentix, the global leaders in authentication, has renewed its partnership with SGS for the fuel integrity program in The Republic of Senegal. The contract renewal was granted after a competitive tender process. Through this ongoing fuel marking program, Authentix and SGS have helped The Republic of Senegal recover tax money that would have otherwise been lost to fuel fraud, ensure fuel quality for motorists and protect the environment.

Authentix and SGS combat the sources of fuel adulteration through the addition of Authentix technology to known adulterants such as kerosene and other low tax fuels which are often used to illicitly adulterate legal tax paid fuels.

Proprietary Authentix testing technology helps inspectors quickly determine if the fuel in question is legal and whether it has been adulterated with low tax fuels. These tests can be conducted in the field and provide an immediate indication of fuel fraud.

Authentix technology solutions power fuel marking programs globally. Authentix has provided technology for a number of successful fuel marking programs in Africa including The Republic of Senegal, Cameroon, Kenya, Cote d'Ivoire and Togo. Authentix' comprehensive fuel marking technology has been instrumental in helping these countries combat fuel fraud and protect tax revenues.

Kenya Renews National Fuel Marking Program with Authentix

Authentix, the global leaders in fuel authentication, has been awarded a multi-year renewal of the national fuel marking program in Kenya. Through the ongoing marking program, Authentix has helped Kenya recover tax money that would have otherwise been lost to fuel fraud, ensure fuel quality for motorists and protect the environment.

This program was first implemented in 1998 to curb the illicit adulteration of domestic Kenyan fuel with fuel destined for export to surrounding countries. Less than a year later, the program was expanded to include protection of domestic diesel from dilution with lower quality kerosene.

Since the program began, Authentix has partnered with Kenyan authorities and their operational partner in this program, SGS, to implement significant technology advances that enable the continued efficacy of the program in the face of determined attempts at undermining and laundering by illegal operators in the fuel market. Proprietary Authentix testing technology helps inspectors quickly determine if the fuel in question is legal and whether it has been adulterated with low tax fuels. These tests can be conducted in the field and provide an immediate indication of fuel fraud.

"The fuel marking program in Kenya is an excellent example of the kind of long term results that are possible through a program of this nature. We are proud to provide the advanced nano-technology that allows this to continue to be effective year in and year out," says Royce Ferguson, Managing Director of Africa for Authentix.

As the global leader in national fuel marking programs, Authentix has a history of success in Africa with similar programs in South Africa, Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire, Cameroon, Swaziland and Togo.

Authentix Helping Cameroon Fight Fraud with New Fuel Marking Program

Authentix, the global leaders in authentication, have partnered with Hydrocarbons Analyses Controls S.A (HYDRAC) to implement a new fuel and fuel adulterant marking program to help the West African nation of Cameroon recover tax money being lost to fuel fraud and ensure fuel quality for Cameroonian motorists.

"This new marking program means Cameroon will be able to fight losses due to fuel tax fraud," said Michael Ngako Tomdjo, Minister of Water and Energy, Cameroon. "Implementing this program will help Cameroon effectively combat fuel fraud, aid consumers and protect the environment."

As part of the program, Authentix marking technology is added to legal tax-paid fuels to indicate that the fuel is authentic and not diluted with lower cost solvents or smuggled fuels. Using Authentix markers, government officials can detect the exact level of dilution. Additionally, to identify and combat the sources of fuel adulteration, a separate Authentix technology is being added to kerosene and other low tax fuels which are often used to adulterate legal tax paid fuels. The Government of Cameroon has incurred heavy losses of fuel tax revenue due in part to tax-free fuel illegally smuggled into the country and because of rampant fuel adulteration. The Authentix program promises to help prevent future revenue losses.

Using proprietary Authentix testing technology, Cameroon can now quickly determine if fuels are legal or if they have been diluted with adulterants or smuggled products. These tests can be conducted in the field and provide an immediate indication of fuel fraud. Currently fuel and fuel adulterant marking is taking place at several locations around Cameroon.

"Authentix operates fuel marking programs all over the world and countries in West Africa are taking note," says Royce Ferguson, Managing Director of Authentix in Africa. "In the past three years Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal and Togo have all seen the value of protecting their fuel with a marking program and we're excited that Cameroon is following suit. In addition to the financial benefits, these programs protect motorists from the damaging effects of using low-quality fuel and the Government of Cameroon is to be commended for taking this important step to protect its citizens from these illicit practices."
