The US has been struggling to establish a workable pedigree system since the Prescription Drug Marketing Act (PDMA) was signed into law in 1988. The paper pedigree provisions of this law were never implemented due to sustained pushback and ultimately an injunction brought by the wholesaler community, preventing the FDA from implementing the PDMA pedigree requirements.
